Friday Fun Day with Smiles.

Welcome to all my new followers, hope you enjoy the journey.

Angela here again to show you what I've been up to this week.

Mostly garden jobs this week and everyone's looking good in the pond.

The new filter has a cover now but the job's not complete yet as I need to do some re-arranging with the rocks to tidy everything up.

If you don't like bugs I should look away now! otherwise you may find this interesting.
This is the biological/mechanical filter which you don't normally see as it's tucked away at the back of the pond and would usually have a lid on it too.
This has a lot of wildlife inside that work to purify the water getting rid of the ammonia and nitrite (Nitrogen Cycle) which is not healthy for the fish. This turns into Nitates which the plants use like a fertilizer.

This is Zeolite which absorbs ammonia and is also
a favourite part where the bugs (Microorganisms/Amphipods) like to live.

I tried to get a close up but not sure you can see any of the bugs that live here but I can tell you there are plenty of them which is good.

The water comes into the filter here.
It's not easy to see but this produces a swirling action which starts the cleaning process.

The water then moves onto the brushes which collect any loose thread algae and large particles.

This is filter matting, dirt or fine algae is collected here and the Nitrifying bacteria collect here too.

And even finer matting polishes the water to help clear it and of course the bugs like it too.

Finally the Zeolite.

This is the last part before the water goes back into the pond.

So that's how this box keeps the water nice and clean.

I did visit a friend last week that had been poorly and she happened to say that she would like a tree for the garden.

I was worried that it might be too close to the house so this week I've dug out a young White Lilac for her, not a tree obviously but they can be trained to grow quite tall and trimmed to look rather tree like so hope she likes it.

It's only a baby but a nice shape and so far it looks as though it's surviving the move from ground to the pot despite all this hot weather.

Now I can't leave without a smile obviously!

 They must know Stan!

Have a great weekend everyone and
 thanks for stopping by.

And if you would like some more smiles you just need to pop over to see what our other friends have been doing this week at Annie's for
"This Week's Smiles" and you can also share your  smiles too.

That was very interesting. I never knew. It was difficult to see the bugs as I didn't know what to look for. I assume the amphipods are red.
I'm sure your friend will love the white lilac. (I know I would) and I hope it will thrive where she is going to put it.
Your funnies are funny and you got me singing along to Every breath/snack you make!
Have a lovely weekend,
Hugs,
Lisca

I was fascinated to read about the pond filter. I love interesting info like that. I saw a few bugs in the two photos. I was really interested in the various stages that the water passes through to get clean and pure. Your pond sure looks good as a result. and those rocks you got will make the filter disappear, I'm sure.

I've been watching the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, but felt I had to stop so I could visit. I thought the last dog funny was great. And now I'll be singing that song all day long. Have a safe and happy weekend, dear.

That was an interesting look at your pond filter. We had one with ultra-violet light in it. It worked too, but I like this natural one better and your fish always look bright and healthy, so they must like it,
I hope your friend loves the white lilac. I had one that I bought as a tiny cutting in a pot from a WI stand in the market, and it grew into a lovely tree. I didn't know at the time it was white, and was a little disappointed the first time it flowered, but it was beautiful and I soon loved it as much as I would have a true lilac one.
Those doggy pictures made me smile. They all know how to use the sad eyes don't they. Kate x

How like you, to dig up your own tree to present to a friend. That's so kind, and who could resist a lilac?!!! As always, love your funnies. May your week be filled with wonderful magic! Sending hugs from Canada.
